Julie picked up the morning paper off the porch and headed back inside

Julie picked up the morning paper off the porch and headed back inside to tend to the whistling kettle. She sighed to herself as she fixed a cup of tea. Another weekend with nothing to do, waking up alone, spending her time alone. The whole scenario was getting very old and tired and, some days, Julie felt the same way.

As she removed the band from the paper and opened it, a handful of advertisements fell onto the kitchen table. "Ugh! MORE advertising! Such a waste of paper," she thought, as she started to gather them up for the recycling bin. Then, one of them caught her eye. "Ladies! We need you for speed dating! This Wednesday night at..." and it continued on, giving the pertinent information. "Speed dating?" Julie thought, as she sipped her tea. "I wonder if it's any fun?" Since her cat, Bruno, did not know the answer, Julie decided to read the ad again and then looked up some information online.

After gathering some details, Julie understood that, through speed dating, she would meet a series of men for ten-minute "dates." If she decided she would like to get to know the fellow on a real date, she would give his table number to the organizers at the end of the event. If the gentleman also gave her number to the organizers, they would arrange for them to make personal contact. It seemed pretty simple.

It had been quite awhile since Julie had a boyfriend in her life. After a number of failed relationships, her friends had dubbed her "Queen of the Break-ups." Julie took their ribbing all in good fun but it also made her feel bad. She really gave her all in a relationship yet none of them seemed to work out in the long term.

Truth be told, Julie was a really passionate woman. What she wanted most in life was to find a handsome, lovable guy to share her time. This had proven difficult and, given her track record, Julie felt like she was running out of places to meet men. Speed dating now seemed like a viable option. It also sounded like a pretty fun way to spend an evening. If nothing else, she was guaranteed to have a number of one-on-one conversations and that would be a pleasant way to pass the time.

Searching under the pile of newspaper, Julie retrieved the event ad and grabbed her mobile phone. She would call the venue and reserve a spot and, hopefully, still have the nerve to show up on Wednesday. She really didn't have much to lose so it was certainly worth the time spent on the phone call.
